REHABILITATION OF THE MANUEL MÁRQUEZ DE LEÓN THEATRE

The presence and existence of the Manuel Márquez de León Theatre in Todos Santos has been a great privilege for the social and cultural development of this community. In 1944 this construction was so majestic and inconceivable for such a small town. This building had a golden age that lasted three decades, during which it was used for theatre related activities, but it was also used as a cinema during the fifties and until 1969. This caused the building to fall into a significant decay, bringing as a consequence a time of abandonment and a considerable diminishment of activities in the theatre, in a great way caused by the introduction of television.

This theatre has undergone two former rehabilitations, during the first one, in 1967, the only change that was done to it was to change the palm roof for a tin sheet roof  that is still there, later on,  in 1983 it underwent a superficial repair. It is noticeable that all of its elements and building materials are original and they are sixty five years old, this calls for an urgent rehabilitation, if not a total one, at least of its spaces and main structures.

It is also important to mention that for unknown reasons, since the beginning the theatre lacked several elements that are indispensable nowadays for the presentation of quality shows, such as dressing rooms, a shaft height that is high enough for the implementation of a grate that will support a scene shifter that can hold a proper theatrical drapery, professional theatrical lighting, a control room, a stage vomitory, a back ramp that will allow the access of scene props, etc… All these are basic elements for the presentation of quality shows.

The Patronage of the Manuel Márquez de León Theatre, C.A. and the Southcalifornian Institute of Culture are very concerned about the needs that have been mentioned above, this is why, since the year 2005 they have been involved in obtaining the necessary financial support from the PAICE (State Cultural Infrastructure Support Program). This program has got tripartite resources coming from the Federal, State, and Municipal Governments. During their 2006 administration and the collaboration of Mr. Guillermo Salas Peyró, Executive President of the Salas Group, it has been possible to carry on with the first stage of rehabilitations of the theatre. The second stage of repairs is still in progress and will be concluded during the year 2009.

After this, there will remain a third and last stage of rehabilitation that will include all the final details that will allow us to have a theatre that is worthy of a magical town, which is what Todos Santos is. With this, we will be able to have access to important artistic spectacles that will eventually participate in the Cultural Corridor La Paz- Todos Santos- Los Cabos.
